Wizards of the Coast has released a new Unearthed Arcana playtest document forDungeons & Dragons, which brings back the four Wizard subclasses that werecut in the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

In the 2014 D&D 5e Player’s Handbook, the Wizard had access to eight subclasses based on the schools of magic, which were formerly the Specialists of previous editions. The 2024 Player’s Handbook decided to give each class exactly four subclasses, which meant the Wizard lost four. This meant the Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, and Illusionist were updated, while the Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer, and Transmuter were cut.

One of the staff members who worked on Baldur’s Gate 3 has slammed the poor quality of the game’s official Dungeons & Dragons minis on social media.

Fans expected the four missing subclasses to return in a future book. It seems that day has nearly arrived, as playtest versions of them are part of the Arcane Subclasses Unearthed Arcana onD&D Beyond. A preview of its content is available on the Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel.

D&D Is Bringing Back Cut Arcane Subclasses

So, what’s new with these classes? The Conjurer has brought some abilities forward, the Enchanter has gained powers like Bolstering Belief that make their allies stronger, the Necromancer can strengthen their undead allies and use negative energy to protect themselves from death, and the Transmuter’s magical stone has been granted fresh abilities.

It’s not just the Wizardwho has received new content, as other magical subclasses have been updated. These include the Arcane Domain for the Cleric, the Arcane Archer for the Fighter (who can now use all ranged weapons), and the Hexblade Patron for the Warlock.

Dungeons & Dragons Party Monster Manual

There are alsotwo new subclasses: the Tattooed Warrior for the Monk, who use magical tattoos in battle, and the Ancestral Sorcery for the Sorcerer, who can call on the knowledge and power of their ancient predecessors.

The cut Wizard subclasses were one of the biggest omissions from the2024 Player’s Handbook, considering how long they’ve been part of the game. Hopefully, it won’t be long until they’re published, and fans will have a chance to share their thoughts by trying them out and providing feedback to the D&D developers.
