James Gunnproves the DC Universe is in good hands withCreature Commandos. This is a feverishly funny and devilishly cool animated series with a chip on its shoulder and an even bigger bleeding heart. Produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, all seven episodes are written by Gunn.

Creature Commandos’ story focuses on a team of monsters assembled by the infamous Amanda Waller, who now has to recruit non-humans to do her dirty work. They head to the Non-Human Internment Division along with Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). There, they get — not the — but a band back together.

Max’s Creature Commandos Season 1 Episode 1: Who is Circe?
In the DCU, Circe (Anya Chalotra) is known as the “Amazonian Sorceress Terrorist.” Circe claims to be the rightful heir to the mythical island nation made up exclusively of Amazonian women, Themyscira. She has a terrorist group following her, known as the “Sons of Themyscira,” who are attacking Pokolistan. Circe promises her followers a place in that country.
Waller is worried about Circe overthrowing the country. Why? The United States has a deal with Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova) over petroleum rights. (Yes, it’s petroleum that makes the world go round.) Waller tells Flag that they need to help the princess. So, they head over to the “Non-Human Internment Division” for help.

Why Can’t Waller Use Human Prisoners?
Since the downfall of Task Force X, the leader of A.R.G.U.S. was told by Congress that she could no longer use human prisoners for her black ops teams. So, Waller finds a loophole—using non-humans to circumvent the law. The group is called Task Force M, which stands for “Monster.” The group includes a woman with no identity called The Bride (Indira Varma).
Another member is Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), whose skin is permanently radioactive. Then there’s Weasel (Sean Gunn), who Waller says was there when Flag’s son died. G.I. Robot has over 300 Nazi kills, but Flag thinks he looks like an old dishwasher. Finally, Nina Mazurksy (Zoë Chao), a level-headed amphibious scientist.

Why Does Rick Flag Sr. Reject Princess Ilana Rostovic?
Creature Commandoscontinues with Flag fighting off the advances of the alluring (and very welcoming) Princess Rostovic. They make an emotional connection in the courtyard after arriving in Pokolistan, where Flag and his team meet Rostovic’s annoying head of security, Alexi. He pretends as a joke that Rick bowed incorrectly to the princess and kills them for the mistake.
That is what you will notice about Gunn’s writing: while the central characters are vile, the surrounding humans act inhumanely. Flag later tells Rostovic about losing his son. While in his room attempting to sleep, the princess arrives, takes off her clothes, and propositions him. However, he rejects Ilana because he is there to protect her (or perhaps he doesn’t want to get too close).

Why Doesn’t Rick Flag Sr. Detonate Doctor Phosphorus?
It appears that Flag refuses to detonate Doctor Phosphorus because he says they are a team. This is a stark difference from the days of theSuicide Squad, where they could detonate anyone who tried to escape (poor Adam Beach). Also, if you remember, Waller killed her entire IT team because they saw too much, to the dismay of Flag’s son.
However, it may also be because Ilana walked into the kitchen where Flag was holding the phone, where he could kill the good doctor at any time. It is unclear if the speech about the “team” is genuine or if his feelings for the princess got in the way. However, since his son had a bleeding heart, maybe this is the same for the general.

Is Max’sCreature CommandosSeason 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained: Who is Stalking “The Bride”?
We are not sure who exactly has been looking for The Bride, but MaxCreature Commandos’s first episode ends with what appears to be Eric Frankenstein. Voicing the character is David Harbour, ofStranger Thingsfame. He is the longtime love interest of The Bride. In the scene, she and Nina arrive at an abandoned mansion.
An old woman observes them, appearing to be the neighbor, before pulling out her cell phone. (Hilariously, when the phone turns on, it has a screenshot of a shirtless Zac Efron.) At first, Eric is brusque and rude to the woman. However, when she tells him what she saw, the facade fades, and he says, with his eyes welling up, “My bride, after all these years, I found you!”
