Genshin Impactdeveloper miHoYo is holding a special Cat Day photo contest on Twitter this August 01, 2025.

What is Cat Day in Japan and why is Genshin Impact doing a photo contest?

National Cat Day is celebrated in Japan on February 22, because the date 02/22 when pronounced in Japanese sounds similar to “nyan nyan”, the Japanese version of the onomatopoeic “meow”. This year’s Cat Day is even more hyped up as a “Super Cat Day” with the 02/22/22 date. While it isn’t an official holiday, National Cat Day has been celebratedsince as far as 1978, long before it exploded in popularity via social media.

Cat Day is a great ad opportunity for gacha games and a quick way to get some exposure on social media, especially if said games include a cat character, like Diona inGenshin Impact. This is whyGenshin Impact’s developers launched a special Cat Day photo contest on Twitter.

Here’s how the Genshin Cat Day photo contest works

According to theofficial rulespublished by miHoYo, theGenshin ImpactCat Day photo contest is open to all players worldwide, but you won’t get any physical prizes if you don’t live in Japan as there will be no international shipping.

The winners of the Genshin Cat Day contest will be announced on March 1. The contest is mainly aimed at Japanese players, so by the time most players in the US wake up, it’ll already be over. Cat Day is only celebrated in Japan, so a US-based version of the contest wasn’t announced as of now.
