The statement in English reads: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a fictional game that has been thoughtfully created to entertain fans and tell a compelling narrative. Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided not to sell Modern Warfare on the PlayStation Store in Russia at this time. We look forward to launching Modern Warfare digitally in Russia on 25 October on PC via Battle.net and on console via Xbox.” Sony further issued a short and unclear statement toGamesIndustrythat said: “Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided not to sell Modern Warfare on the PlayStation Store in Russia at this time, we apologize for the inconvenience.”
In Activision’s statement, it mentions that the game is fictional which might be the crux of the issue here behind Sony’s decision, but what is strange in their choice is thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfarewill release in Russia on PCÂ viaÂBattle.netand on console via Xbox, but they’ve refused to sell the block-busting title digitally. I’m also assuming the title will still be displayed in stores around the country as well.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’ssingle-player campaign seems to depict conflicts in the fictional Middle Eastern country of Urzikstan with a number of run-ins with Russian soldiers. Farah, the founding member and commander of the Urzikstan Liberation Force, witnesses an attack where Russian soldiers kill her parents and then she, in turn, kills the soldier. Labeled a terrorist organization by the Russian government for their long-standing resistance, Russian soldiers are ordered to make no distinction between the terror group Al-Qatala and the liberation fighters under Farahâs command. AQ terrorists pursue Farah and the ULF with a mandate to kill.
This isn’t the first timeCall of Dutyhas been subjected to scrutiny in Russia. InModern Warfare 2on PS3, the controversial airport scene from the Russian version had to be removed due to the player having to participate in a massacre of civilians. In the statement, it does state that “Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided not to sell Modern Warfare on the PlayStation Store in Russia at this time” which may mean that it will be available on there eventually but until we know more, this currently stands as a very odd and vague decision.
