Broken Arrow, the most highly anticipated RTS of the year, is out now.

First announced back in 2019, the RTS has been playable since Monday through advanced access for owners of the Vanguard Edition, which also included exclusive skins and the soundtrack, but now everyone can play through the less expensive standard edition.

It’s worth noting that, while the full release version is less expensive than the Vanguard Edition, it will not be going on sale during the Steam Summer Sale, which is starting later this month.

It was previously at the top of Steam’s wishlist rankings for the RTS genre, and is now ranking high on the Trending Games and Popular Releases charts on the SteamDBfront page.

What Players Should Expect

Broken Arrow puts players in command of the forces of either the United States or Russia in a modern global conflict, mostly centered on the Balkan states. Each side gets its own campaign, and progression will be somewhat dynamic, with player actions influencing the order in which certain events play out.

Beyond that, there’s also a skirmish mode, which caused controversy during the advanced access periodby requiring players to team up with two other human players in order to take on a team of three AI opponents.

That is still the case with the full release, but Steel Balalaika and Slitherine state that the ability to play alongside AI allies will be added in the future.

Other than that, there are competitive online multiplayer matches up to 5v5, as well as a scenario editor that allows players to share their creations using Steam Workshop.

Aside from the criticism over the bizarre inability to play the skirmish mode solo, some bugs, and complaints over the difficulty of the campaign paired with inability to save during the lengthy missions, reception of Broken Arrow has been otherwise good so far, with the game sitting at a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam.

The player consensus seems to be that, while the PvE and solo content have issues, the multiplayer modes are generally solid and the tactical gameplay itself is well-crafted, if not necessarily perfectly balanced.
