Blizzardquietly patched a bug inOverwatch 2that caused players to unintentionally make store purchases through the use of the in-game chat while browsing menus.
Aswe previously reported, Reddit user Dracyoshirecounted a storyabout how they accidentally purchased a skin for Junker Queen while chatting using the in-game chat and scrolling the hero gallery. Their theory was that the inputs being entered into the chat were being read by the game’s menus, meaning two spacebar presses could theoretically purchase the player a skin.

After the issue was communicated to Blizzard, they refused to refund Dracyoshi his 300 legacy credits, stating “We are not able to offer refunds or any compensation for unlocks made with in-game currency in Overwatch.” The recently releasedOctober 7 hotfixappears to have resolved the purchasing bug, though Dracyoshi has still yet to be refunded and as they put it, “I doubt I ever will be.”
The Reddit thread has many commenters sharing their own experiences falling victim to this bug. While Blizzard has now fixed this bug, they haven’t made any public statement regarding refunds or any compensation for those who lost in-game currency while using the in-game chat.
Overwatch 2’s launch has been rocky, to say the least, from DDOS attacks on the serversto previously-owned content disappearing from players’ accounts and a mobile phone requirement to even log into the game, Blizzard hasn’t been having a good time. The companyapologised to the player basefollowing the game’s launch, saying “We expected the launch of Overwatch 2 to go smoothly. We hold ourselves to a higher standard and we are working hard to resolve the issues you are experiencing.”
We have reached out to Blizzard for an explanation of why refunds are not being issued to those affected by this bug.
