No matter what kind of game you’re playing, one characteristic tends to remain faithful: your ultimate ability is your ace in the hole.
It is the apex of the character fantasy you’re playing and what makes you feel strongest.

‘We Need To Earn People Coming Over:’ Smite 2’s Gameplan To Retain Its Players
We spoke to a trio of developers from Titan Forge Games as they move towards releasing a sequel to their decade-old MOBA.
SMITE 2follows in thefootsteps of its predecessorand brings some truly incredible ultimates for its gods to use on the battlefield, both in terms of effectiveness and flashiness.

But of course, some simply look and feel better than others, and some are significantly more impactful. Let’s see the best ultimatesSMITE 2’s gods have to offer.
9Ragnarok (Fenrir)
God Pantheon
Initial Ultimate Cooldown
110 seconds
Fenrir’s ultimate, Ragnarok, made this list for two primary reasons. Firstly, seeing him go massive and crowd-control immune is a terrifying sight (especially if you’re the one running away from him).

Secondly, unlike most of the ultimates that will follow in this list, Fenrir’s is very much a single-target one. That said, it isone of the best and most effective ways to single out an enemy god. You’re not only locking them down but bringing them over to your team on a silver platter.
To be clear, other ultimates single out enemy gods, but they usually make the enemy god untargetable by the rest of the team for a short time (like King Arthur or Mordred’s ultimates)

Fenrir’s Ragnarok does no such thing, making it an easy kill.
8Hovering Death (Thanatos)
You Can’t Outrun Death
90 seconds
Two words: flying execute.
Thanatos’ ultimate feels incredible to use. For starters, it’s one of a handful of ultimates that lets you traverse the vertical axis of the game and fly around, really putting the ultimate’s name into perspective.
But more than that, the harrowing scream that escapes Thanatos as he strikes down to eitherexecute or stun enemies in a small area-of-effect landing zoneis scary enough to startle your enemies if they’re not expecting it.

It’s also anexcellent tool for engagement. That is, if you’re selfless enough to forgo an execution and help your team’s tanks by starting a team fight.
7Defender Of Olympus (Athena)
Reinforcements Incoming!
120 seconds
A support god who hasan ultimate that is global? Sign me up.
While Defender of Olympus isn’t as flashy or effective asmost teamfight-styleultimates that will follow in this list, its utility is unquestionable.
Furthermore, there’s nothing like leaping into the air from across the whole map and crashing down with a superhero landing to help out a teammate in need.
As far as supports go,Athena’sultimate hits the character fantasy of the role really well while looking super cool during the cast.
6Pillar Of Agony (Hades)
The Underworld Calls…
From a character-fantasy and aesthetic standpoint,Hades’ultimate is practically second to none.
Hades doesn’t summon anything to do his work for him; instead,he himself is the center of a vortex of darknessthat sucks all enemies in for some amazing set-up for teamfights.
Or, if you build your Hades full damage like I often do, you can just kill all the enemy gods caught in your ultimate yourself without any help from your team.
Hades’ ultimate truly makes you feel like a force to be reckoned withand if your enemies don’t respect your ultimate as something that can singlehandedly cause them to lose a teamfight, they’re in for averyrude awakening.
5No Escape (Ares)
When One Chain Isn’t Enough
Good ol’Aresis a classic god inSMITE,and his ultimate is stilla menace inSMITE 2.
A mighty mass pull that draws all enemies towards Ares’s locationis incredible for setting up team fights or keeping opponents on their toes.
Enemies must constantly be aware of Ares’s ultimate cooldown, his positioning on the battlefield, and even the cooldown of his Purification Beads.
SMITE 2 Hands-On: A Godly Upgrade
We had the opportunity to play Smite 2 on the day of its announcement.
Ares alsolooks super cool while channeling his ultimate, but when you’re glowing and hovering in the air, dragging enemy gods toward you with chains, that goes without saying.
4Fields Of Love (Cupid)
And Love Hurts… A Lot
100 seconds
A few hunters inSMITE 2havebig area-of-effect ultimatesto swing a teamfight in their team’s favor, and Cupid’s Fields of Love packs that punch in one of the best ways in the game.
While Fields of Love is just as flashy as another hunter’s area-of-effect ultimate (like Cernunnos or Medusa), what brings it above the others isits Cripple effect, which prevents enemies from using any movement-based abilities while within the ability radius.
This makes it nearly impossible for gods caught in the ultimate to get out beforethe mass stungoes off (it slows as well as cripples, by the way), and getting stunned by this ultimate usually means you’re going to die shortly thereafter.
3Fear No Evil (Hun Batz)
Monkey See, Monkey Kill
Hun Batz’s ultimate is one of the best in the game, and the cherry on top is that he’s an assassin.
I’m not sure who decided to give an assassin – the type of playstyle that sees you trying to assassinate enemies one or two at a time –a mass area-of-effect ultimate that displaces and fears all enemies.
But here we are.
Hearing the drums and monkey screeches go off is never pleasant, even if Hun Batz is an ally. Still, no one can argue against its effectiveness.
2Open The Gates (Hecate)
Time For The Ol' Switcharoo
Hecate, the first god introduced inSMITE 2, came crashing into the game with a bang with her ultimate.
I mean,a mass teleportation that forcefully displacesand stunsenemies? What?Allies can use it, too?
Open the Gates has to beone of the best set-up ultimates out there. Unlike a mage like Hades, Hecate doesn’t have to put herself in harm’s way to do this.
Any tank player would be happy to have a Hecate on their team, misdirecting their attention before they set up a team fight.
Plus, the portals created are absolutely stunning.
1Changeling (The Morrigan)
The Best Cloner You’ll Ever See
The Morrigan’s ultimate, Changeling, is at the top of the list for a simple reason:she can turn into any god present in the match she’s fighting in and have access to all their abilities – ultimate included.
The straightforward act of taking on another god’s skin and power makes Changeling one of themost versatile ultimates in the gamewith – dare I say – the highest skill ceiling to use as effectively as possible.
Even though every ultimate that came before on this list is unique and impactful, The Morrigan can wield them all as easily as she swings her spear.
How can Changeling not be the best when it is quite literally every ultimate in the game, all neatly packed into one button?
