What Is The Zhentarim?
TheZhentarimis an underground network of thieves, mercenaries, and assassins in Faerun.Throughout their long history, they have been known to be a pretty malevolent and evil organization that works to serve themselves rather than the greater good. At one point throughout their history, they were indentured to serve both Bane and Cyric. Bane, being the God of Tyranny, and Cyric, being the God of Lies and Trickery, the Zhentarim weren’t in a good place.Overall, this organization serves to help themselves and bring terror to anyone who gets in their way. The Zhentarim are helping the Absolute trickMinscinto being a slave to the Absolute. They are akin to the Dark Brotherhood withinThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
What Is The Guild?
The Guild is another underground organization in Baldur’s Gate; however, this one isn’t as malevolent. While this organization is full of thieves, they aren’t as dark and evil as the Zhentarim. They work below Baldur’s Gate, stealing and trading in the Black Market.But, speaking with the members, you can see that they all genuinely care about Baldur’s Gate and creating a better future for the city.The Guild is working to actively kill the Stone Lord (AKA Minsc) due to the fact that the Absolute has him killing Guild members. They are akin to the Thieves Guild within The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Should You Pick The Zhentarim Or The Guild?
Overall, deciding who to side with is up to you. At the end of the game, both sides will offer you aid against the Absolute. However, for storytelling purposes, The Guild is probably the better of the two options. While they are a morally gray organization (kind of a Robin Hood situation, depending on your stance), they do care about Baldur’s Gate at the end of the day. Additionally, who is to say that Bane or Cyric won’t indenture the Zhentarim again, causing lots of problems for the city?Plus, if you side with The Guild, you can loot 10,000 gold from the Zhentarim leader, which is what was paid by the Absolute to have Minsc tricked. The truth is, it is up to you to decide.
