The finale ofNarutobrought about the end of an era. The popularity of the series had reached such an extent that Shueisha proposed a sequel to Masashi Kishimoto. Kishimoto initially rejected the idea but later returned to superviseBoruto.

While the sequel to Naruto was a great idea in theory, its execution was lacking. The resulting series was nowhere as popular as its parent franchise. Currently, the anime only has a 6.4 rating on IMDB, whereasNarutohas an 8.4 rating. This begs the question ifBorutowas really the best idea to continueNaruto‘s legacy.

ANarutoreboot was in the talks beforeBorutobegan serialization

In a2016 interviewofMasashi KishimotoandMikio Ikemotoby Shonen Jump, the duo talked about the finale ofNarutoas well as theBorutosequel. As it turns out, the initial idea wasn’t a sequel but a reboot of the originalNarutoseries. According to Ikemoto:

As the Naruto serialization was coming to an end, we talked about how it would be neat if the series could be rebooted and drawn by a new artist just like an American comic. At that point it was just talk, and I hadn’t been working on m own thumbnails for a long time.

Ikemoto admitted that when the reboot was being discussed, it was just talk, and he had not been working on his thumbnails. He thinks that the idea of a reboot was presented to him because they thought it would appeal to Ikemoto and thus motivate him further. In fact, the talks of the reboot went on for 6 months to a year.

The illustrator further clarified that ifNarutoreceived a sequel, it should most definitely be drawn by Kishimoto. If it’s a continuation then whatever happened before inNarutois bound to take precedence and dictate the story. However, it was a completely different scenario with a reboot. Ikemoto pointed out that they could do whatever they wanted and nobody could complain, an aspect that he liked.

MaybeNarutowas better off with a reboot than a sequel

Unfortunately, when Ikemoto received the story, it was actually the sequel, which is now calledBoruto. He even commented that at that point he wasin too deep to escape. This highlights the fact that even Ikemoto wanted a reboot more than a sequel because they realized the series would benefit more from it.

Now thatBorutois well into serialization and has also received an anime series, even fans will agree that aNarutoreboot would have performed much better. BeforeNaruto‘s legendary status,Borutopales in comparison. From a less compelling storyline and a lack of character depth to several criticisms of the main characterBoruto, fans have a ton of complaints regarding the sequel anime.

Standing in the current scenario, it is easy to see that both Kishimoto and Ikemoto’s initial idea for aNarutoreboot might have worked better. Rather than seeingNaruto, Sasuke, and the OG gang nerfed, fans would have much preferred to see them reimagined in a new style.
