Peter Jackson clearly failed to recreate hisLord of the Ringsmagic withThe Hobbittrilogy. Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in the earlier film trilogy, had no role inThe Hobbitfilms. Mortensen’s doubt turned out to be valid as that one thing became the trilogy’s biggest enemy. Jackson tried to emulate the success ofThe Lord of the Ringsbut made a big misstep when he tried to follow the three-film format of the earlier film series to these prequel films.

The Lord of the Ringswas his sequel series and it was much longer than the publisher had hoped for. For economic reasons, it was published in three volumes over the course of a year. It was this sequel work that caught Jackson’s attention in the first place and he made it into a movie series. The three volumes became a trilogy of films that gained international acclaim.

Years later, Jackson saw the scope for a film in Tolkien’s first work in the Middle-earth series,The Hobbit. While the book was considerably shorter, Jackson tried to use the successful trilogy format ofThe Lord of the RingsforThe Hobbitas well. It was not a well-thought-out idea, as he struggled with finding enough material and the pacing of the series.

Viggo Mortensenhad this exact doubt even before the first film, as he shared withThe Guardian,“I’m interested in seeing how he’s managed to make three movies out of a relatively slim volume.”However, he kept his hopes high for Jackson’s creative genius. Mortensen shared:

I’m interested in seeing that world again, and seeing what Peter Jackson’s done, how he’s made use of the improvements in special effects and cameras and the different way of shooting, which will probably enhance the visual aspect of the experience, the sound also.
