The recut version of the 1990 classic from Francis Ford Coppola,The Godfather: Part IIIis set for a limited theatrical release on December 4, followed by its Blu-ray and digital drop on December 8. Andy Garcia recently watched the new cut with an intimate crew that included Al Pacino and Diane Keaton, and they were all thrilled with the results! Fans are eager to check it out as well!

Garcia, who plays Vincent Corleone in the original, revealed in a recent chat that he never really understood the original’s backlash, which mainly stemmed from the casting of Sofia Coppola, Francis’s daughter.
Why Did People Criticize Sofia Coppola inThe Godfather III?
Sofia Coppolawas cast as Mary Corleone, the daughter of Michael played by Al Pacino, and Kay played by Diane Keaton inThe Godfather: Part III, but she wasn’t the first pick. Initially, Winona Ryder was set for the role, but she bowed out due to scheduling conflicts and health issues.
Otherbig names, like Madonna and Julia Roberts, were even in the mix before Francis Ford Coppola decided to cast his daughter, who was visiting the set during a college break.

While Sofia Coppola had some minor roles in the earlier films, this was her first major gig, and boy, did the critics come out swinging! They slammed her casting as nepotism, arguing there were more deserving candidates like Annabella Sciorra. Many also criticized her performance, calling it stiff and amateurish, which added pressure on her. He later noted that the real issue lay in the film’s unclear story rather than her acting.
Taylor Sheridan Was Inspired by The Godfather to Keep Kevin Costner Away from 1 Actor: ‘He wasn’t attempting to look or act like Marlon Brando’
Despite the backlash, Coppola has taken it all in stride and has become an established filmmaker now in her own right. So, was the criticism of her casting valid? On the surface, maybe, there were likely better options available, and nepotism will always be a touchy subject. But let’s be real, much of theblamefell unfairly on Sofia Coppola instead of the director, who ultimately made the call.
Why Andy Garcia Believes All the Sofia Coppola Criticism Was Unjust!
Andy Garciashares the sentiment as well! In a chat withThe Hollywood Reporterahead of the release ofMario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, the recut version by Francis Ford Coppola, Garcia expressed his hope that fans will finally embrace this reimagined gem and give Sofia Cappola the love she deserves. As he explained,
I never had an issue with the first one, but I am very close to it. There is a clarity to this version that Francis wanted. I thought a lot of things were unjust about it, especially how Sofia [Coppola] was treated. I think if people revisit this film, they will see a very honest, deep and soulful performance by Sofia. I think there is great tragedy in the character, a very courageous performance, and I am very proud of the work we did.

There’s no denying that despite the controversies,The Godfatherfilms have solidified their status as cinematic classics, with some even calling it the very definition of true cinema. And the films’ legacy only grows stronger with time!
