Akira Toriyama has given Goku and Vegeta numerous transformations that act as the heart ofDragon Ball’sessence. Each of these transformations stands out because of how unique in nature they are. While some of them may grow with the support of others, the hold they have on their own accord makes them all magnificent to experience.

Out of all the transformations, Vegeta’s Ultra Ego has a hold on his fans for many reasons. It held more value than just being akin to Goku’s Ultra Instinct. It’s power was beyond compare and a lot of thought was put into not only the design but also the name, hoping for it to mirror what Goku personified.

The Birth of Ultra Ego in Dragon Ball

Ultra Ego, as stated by Toyotaru during an interview (viaX), was meant to replicate Beerus’ design. Due to its link to the Gods of Destruction, its nature was contrasting with that of Ultra Instinct. It was supposed to stand out and be different. Moreover, it was one of Vegeta’s biggest and strongest transformations. While it came intoDragon Ballquite later,Akira Toriyamaalluded to its existence almost 4 decades before.

Dragon Ball Zshowcased Vegeta’s affinity to tap into Ultra Ego on multiple occasions while he fought various villains. WhenDragon Ball Superstarted, it was once again hinted that Vegeta had a form that exceeded all those fans had seen so far while fighting Beerus. Moreover, the God of Destruction saw Vegeta to be a better battle opponent than Goku because of their different fighting styles.

Vegeta and Goku Can Never Become Equals but Akira Toriyama Gave the Prince of All Saiyans an Advantage that Makes Him Infinitely More Unique

When Goku first transformed into Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power arc, in the fashion that is almost linked to the Prince of All Saiyans, Vegeta too wished to find his own upgrade. This led him to start practicing his Ultra Ego form even before it was ready to be used in a fight.

Akira Toriyama wasn’t Solely Responsible for Ultra Ego

During an interview, Toyotaru revealed that it was he who had picked out the name and design for Vegeta’s transformation into Ultra Ego. It wasn’t exactly the suffix of the name that purely justified his character but more so about what it signified in Japanese.

The original Japanese words for ‘Instinct’ and ‘Ego’ are similar, but depending on the kanji or the reading, Instinct becomes ‘Your body moves on your own, right?’ So that’s Ultra Instinct… On the other hand, even though the Japanese for ‘Ego’ is similar to ‘Instinct,’ if you look closely at the kanji, you could explain it as ‘Doing as you please,’ right?… In short, it’s the difference between ‘your body moving freely’ and ‘moving your body freely.’

While speaking during the interview (viaX), Toyotaru regarded how Ego and Instinct have very similar Kanji and that could very well be symbolism towards how both Goku and Vegeta are two sides of the same coin.

The subtle difference between the two words showcases just how different yet similar the two Saiyans are. For the longest time, they have helped push each other to new heights but their morals contrast greatly, making them the epitome of to be shackled or to be free.
