As a devoted fan of the iconic show,Breaking Bad, I’ve always admired Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of Walter White. From his humble beginnings as a high school chemistry teacher to his terrifying transformation into the ruthless drug kingpin Heisenberg, the 68-year-old managed to embody the character. In fact, the actor’s performance in the 5-season series felt so real and complex that it became hard to imagine anyone else being a good fit for the role.

However, it wasn’t until I listened to Cranston’s own confession about his journey in Hollywood that cemented the belief in my head; that no one else could have embodied this character in the same way.
Why Bryan Cranston was the perfect Walter White
Like many other actors,Bryan Cranston’sjourney in Hollywood is a story of persistence, versatility, and eventual triumph. Although the actor began his career with small roles, it paved the way to his breakthrough role as Hal inMalcolm in the Middle. While the star had been searching for his big break since his mid-20s, it came only after he had hit 40. In an interview withRoute Magazine, he revealed just how similar he was to hisBreaking Badcharacter, Walter White.
[I was] a journeyman actor working fairly regularly and steadily, and paying my bills, along with my wife who was working as an actor at the same time too. We were doing fine, but you do, you grow, you mature, and then if something changes drastically in your life, as it did for me at that age, you are much better equipped.

Cranston continued,“I was already a father, a husband, a homeowner, I knew what was important, I was thinking every time I got a job — when Malcolm in the Middle hit — it’s like man, I was socking away that money. We didn’t go out and buy anything, we were just putting that money in the bank, putting it in a 529 plan for our daughter to be able to go to college, so all that stuff was happening.”
With the actor having practically been living the life of his character, it was easy for him to take on the role. In fact, it made sense that he could bring out the desperation that oozed out of the terminally ill character.

Breaking Bad’s Walter White Won’t Be Bryan Cranston’s Most Famous Role If He Plays This Insanely Controversial Personality in a Biopic
Cranston gave the world an unforgettable performance in the show. However, there was once some doubt whether the man who played Hal inMalcolm in the Middlecould handle such a drastic change.
How Malcolm in the Middle almost made Bryan Cranston miss out on Breaking Bad
In 2008,Vince Gilligan’sBreaking Badtook over the world. Although viewers were captivated by the crime packed adventures of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and his sidekick, Jesse Pinkman played byAaron Paul, producers were not too keen on the 68-year-old. After all, they had only seen him as a sitcom dad inMalcolm in the Middle. In an interview withTHR, the executives revealed that they were rather unconvinced, even though the director had his heart set on the actor.
We all still had the image of Bryan shaving his body in Malcolm in the Middle. We were like, ‘Really? Isn’t there anybody else?’

While most of the network’s executives were not onboard, Gillian pushed them to watch Cranston’scameo episode onX-Filesto change their minds. The director explained,“That was a tricky part to cast on X-Files. We needed somebody who could be dramatic and scary yet have an underlying humanity so when he dies, you felt sorry for him. Bryan nailed it.”

Shortly after the executives watched the episode, they came onboard for Cranston to play the part and it turned out to be their best decision. After all, the show received 16 Emmys, 2 Golden Globes and other prestigious awards. However, it may not have reached the heights that it did without the actor in the lead.
