This Is The Last, But By No Means Least, Of The Wario Land Series
Before the yellow hat-clad antihero tested our twitch reflexes with his devious microgames in his subsequent series,WarioWare, the Wario Land titles were a series of clever platformers released from theoriginal Game Boy, all the way to the Game Boy Advance.
Usually characterized as having greedy predilections, Wario is lured to a strange pyramid of legend deep in the jungle where he ultimately becomes stuck.
The player must explore, jump, and treasure hunt his way through first a tutorial passage within the pyramid and then four more themed passages in order to escape, ideally with plenty of treasure in tow.
Wario Land 4 mixed up several aspects of the seriesand is notable for being the only one where Wario is burdened with a Health Meter, adding to the challenge and thrill of his pyramid passage incursions.
Suppose Wario’s Health Meter is fully depleted. In that case, the player will have to say goodbye to whatever treasure and collectibles they gathered while playing, and they’ll need to play the level all over again.
At the end of each of the four themed passages lies a boss that Wario must defeat before a timer runs out. A clear inspirational line can be drawn between the mechanics in this series, especially its minigames, and the eventual rise of Wario’s WarioWare series.
Wario Land 4 Is The First GBA Title To Be Released For The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack This Year
Leading up to the release of Wario Land 4, the most recent expansion addition was F-Zero GP Legend and F-Zero Climax. Both of which were released inOctober 2024.
If that’s not enough to convince one to check the game out, Nintendo themselves seem to think that playing the 2001 GBA classic would make for excellent Valentine’s Day plans, as seen in their announcement on social media.
