But as much as we all hoped for quick answers, Martin’s creative process has been a slow burn. And in a recent interview withTHR, he admitted something that may make some fans uncomfortable: he doesn’t know if he’ll ever finish the book.

Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.

Despite the long wait, Martin’s fans have remained hopeful, clinging to the belief that the next book will eventually arrive.

With over a decade of delays, it’s no wonder that Martin’s updates have oscillated between hopeful and bleak. A year ago, the author, 76, reported that he had written 1,100 pages ofThe Winds of Winter(viaBangcast). The progress is, shall we say, glacial.

Martin himself can’t help but chuckle at the growing anxiety. Speaking to THR, he said:

In a recent interview, Martin admitted he’s not sure when, or if, The Winds of Winter will ever be finished.

A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!

While we appreciate his sense of humor, we can’t help but feel like the winds of time are slipping through our fingers.
