Despite its popularity,Narutohas its fair share of criticism. From underdeveloped to badly written, the characters fail to fulfill expectations. Although the series is praised for its fights, its lackluster writing is a caveat. This holds especially true with the character designs and plot inconsistencies. However, there’s more to it.

Fans pointed to similar character designs in the series on Instagram. Unsurprisingly, there are at least four characters in this case. However, these characters differ in most ways. While this is a single instance, it points to the author’s lazy writing. It also reflects on his underplaying and underdeveloping characters in the series.
Fans point to the uncanny resemblances in Naruto designs
Narutohas some of the iconic character designs. Be it Haku or Zabuza, the series peaked with the original characters. Besides being a popular series, it showcased some of the iconic fights. Although the series outlines impeccable animation and design, it cannot salvage itself from redundancy. This holds especially true withcharacter look-alikes.
From Sasuke to Izuna, the series is ridden with doppelganger characters. While its sequel is critiqued for itssame-face syndrome, the original series surpasses it. This is especially the case with Part 1. While lookalike characters may seem uncommon, it gets mind-boggling. This was made clear when several fans pointed to the similarities in 4 characters.

Masashi Kishimoto: “I wish I could achieve” in Naruto What Quentin Tarantino Did in His Movies
An Instagram user@anime_user_129shared a video pointing to the character lookalikes. The similarities between Kotetsu, Hayate, Izumo, and Genma garnered mixed reactions.

Another user @theyluvvquanny said:4 goats right here dat only laid back so naruto could cook🗿

A user @ wyattsmith4963 reminisced about the characters saying:Ahhh Azumo and Koetesu the eternal gate guards
Another user @kurama.00 commented:Gekko, Hayate and those two

A user @enrique.alvarez.navarro said:Aren’t they like the same dude just with different headwear and hairstyles?
Although there are several similarities in character designs, there’s more to it. The sequel seems to outline similarities as well. Mirai Sarutobi, for example, is a lookalike of Shisui Uchiha. While the character designs display a sense of redundancy, it also points to Kishimoto’s lazy writing.
Masashi Kishimoto may have taken his lazy writing a bit too far with these characters
AlthoughMasashi Kishimotois celebrated for his magnum opus, he faces backlash as well. This is especially true with his bad writing of certain characters. Most of his criticism is directed at ruining Sakura’s character and there’s more to it. His underplaying of most of hisside charactershas led many fans to call him out on it.
Furthermore, Kishimotokilling iconic charactersearly on was the worst move. From Kimimaro to Zabuza, the mangaka stripped the characters of their potential. However, this continued in Part 2 as well. With Utakata’s death, most fans believed that his character deserved better. The mangaka’s underplaying of Ino and Tenten adds to the laziness aspect of his writing.
Masashi Kishimoto Has a Deeper Reason for Giving Naruto His ‘Never Give Up’ Attitude
All in all, while there are redundancies, the sequel seems to rectify it.Boruto’streatment of Tenten and Sakura gives the characters their due respect. Moreover, it outlines their skills and caliber as veteran kunoichis. Although Kishimoto’s designs are similar the characters differ in their motives and personalities.
Narutois available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Viz Media.
