As someone who adores both the Rogue and Metroidvania genres, I can attest it’s really hard to find successful hybrids of both.
Yes, there are a few true Roguevanias out there, and some really fun ones. But there are a lot more that are, frankly, a bit of a mess.

Given how rare Roguevanias are, we’ve taken a few liberties with this list. Each of these games nails the Rogue elements, but some of them are definitely more platformer than pure Metroidvania.
9 Metroidvania Sequels Better Than The Original
Metroidvania sequels are pretty rare, but sometimes, they are even better than their predecessors.
Still, we think you’ll be happy with the games we’ve included, and all feature enough DNA from each of these two genres to have a fair argument to be mentioned. They range from well-known darlings to games I had barely heard of, and everything in between.

10GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon
Death Is Only the Beginning
PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Rogue-like, Hack and Slash, Platformer
Release Date
July 06, 2025
If we were only judging it based on the visuals and gameplay,GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moonwould probably be much closer to the very tip top of this Roguevania list. The incredible Ukiyo-e-inspired visuals just scream with color and details that are sure to make you wonder why you haven’t ever heard of this game.
As for howGetsuFumaDen: Undying Moonplays, though, that’s a bit more of a mixed bag. It’s incredibly demanding, and you’ll be dying again and again. But once you start to get the hang of things, you’ll find an engaging and worthwhile adventure.

That said, it fits into more of the Rogue camp than Metroidvania, since it’s very focused on combat instead of exploration and platforming. With that in mind, it also features a mini map and lots of nooks and crannies to explore, which is a staple in any Metroidvania game.
If you don’t mind a challenging Rogue adventure, this is a game you should check out.

9Abyss Odyssey
The Darkness Beckons
Abyss Odyssey
I’m just gonna say it — I’m still a bit annoyedAbyss Odysseynever got released on any Nintendo consoles where it would truly be at home. Much like the last game, I was captivated by the art style for a while.
The game also features a truly unique take on the Roguevania genre, and features combat elements that would fit perfectly into your favorite fighting game.

10 Best 3D Roguelikes You Need To Play
Risk of Rain 2 isn’t the only one, I’ll have you know.
Best of all, even though there are nominally only three playable characters to play the game with, you’ll eventually learn how to capture the souls of your enemies, and can play as any foe or boss thus captured.
Another bonus,Abyss Odysseylets you adventure with a friend, which was a good choice given how difficult the game can be.
While the game leans into the fighting sub-genre, it’s still very rogue, and features mini-maps as you explore. Which means it’s still nominally a Roguevania, just not enough of one to sit higher on this list.
8Weapon Hacker
The Unknown Challenger
Luke Rissacher
Roguevania
June 18, 2025
Since I’m an honest guy, I’ll be frank with you — before starting this list, I hadn’t heard ofWeapon Hacker. Which is only funny because it turned out to be a perfect example of the rare hybrid genre that came out 5 years ago.
Developed and published by a solo indie developer,Weapon Hackerdistills the Metroidvania experience into bite-sized, procedurally generated adventures you may return to whenever you feel like it.
The key feature is tweaking your best possible weapons to defeat the horrifying monsters arrayed against you, with buzz saw guns, tasers, and much more at your disposal.
The only downside? The game’s art style wasn’t as impressive as many other nominees on this list. Still, if you’re just looking for the Roguevania experience and don’t care about the window dressing, you’ll find a lot to enjoy.
Back Into the Pit
If you feel like you’ve recently read another list by me that includesChasm, there’s a good reason. For all its faults, it’s a really solid example of the Roguevania genre.
It’s also just a really pretty game, with a lush pixelated style and plenty of fierce monsters to fight your way. Defeating the big bads provides you new means to explore, a staple for any true Metroidvania.
One of the only minor downsides toChasmwas that the story, although compelling, wasn’t the strongest part of the adventure. The balance can also be somewhat skewed against you.
Still, a perfect example of a Roguevania that is still worth checking out.
6Ghost 1.0
Ghost in the Machine
PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One
Unepic Games
June 23, 2025
There aren’t many Metroidvanias out there where the character you’re controlling isn’t the main character. But that’s the premise inGhost 1.0. The android you maneuver is just one part of the puzzle of the story.
With that in mind, you’re able to do neat things like become incorporeal, take over new hosts, and more. The game also has two modes, one which is a more traditional Metroidvania, and another that’s a survival with strong rogue-like elements.
RogueVania Dead Cells Hitting Steam Early Access on May 10th; New Trailer Released
Best of all, there’s tons to discover in this massive space station, including powerful new weapons and handy passive upgrades.
No matter how you cut it,Ghost 1.0is a rich and deep example of the Roguevania genre.
5ScourgeBringer
The Suffering Tree
ScourgeBringer
There’s still a not insignificant part of me that hatesScourgeBringer. I generally consider myself close to a platformer expert. Despite this, the game constantly handed my butt to me, even after I started to get the hang of things.
My personal issues aside,ScourgeBringeris a gorgeous and utterly unique little rogue platformer. And while it doesn’t embrace the Metroidvania genre as much as I’d enjoy, there’s a lot of freedom to explore and powerful weapons to acquire.
When all else fails, you’re able to spend vital resources to unlock more skills from the Chiming Tree. And trust me, you’ll need all the help you can get to survive throughout the entire game.
You’ll need to fully master attacking while moving, and staying airborne most of the time to have a chance to beatScourgeBringer. Best of luck!
4Rogue Legacy
Everybody’s Favorite
Rogue Legacy
Okay, even if you’re not a fan of the Roguevania genre, you’ve probably heard ofRogue Legacy. It has played a huge role in popularizing the rogue sub-genre in recent years.
This genealogical quest not only spans lifetimes, but rewards you for exploring dangerous environments. It also features insane bosses that will put your Bullet Hell dodging skills to the test.
If that wasn’t enough, there are also tons of different classes to play as, not to mention some utterly hilarious traits you might inherit.
But again,Rogue Legacyfeels more like a platformer than a pure Metroidvania, which is why we saved the purest examples of a Roguevania for the last three.
3Sundered: Eldritch Edition
Tentacles FTW
Sundered: Eldritch Edition
Thunder Lotus is an amazing team, and they deserve a lot of praise forSundered: Eldritch Edition. I’m normally not a fan of such hardcore adventures, but they managed to build a balanced one here.
Better yet,Sundered: Eldritch Editionis a Roguevania that fully embraces Cthulhu lore as you navigate a shifting hellscape. Perks will be hard-won but necessary, and there are a lot of ways to customize the game’s incredibly fluid combat.
10 Laughably Easy Metroidvania Bosses
Here’s a list of laughably easy Metroidvania bosses, including first and endgame boss fights, from titles like Hollow Knight, Chasm, and more.
Not enough? How about multiple endings, insane boss battles and the ability to Resist or Embrace the powers offered to you for some added challenge?
Put simply, this is a wonderful example of the Roguevania genre, but not quite the very best.
Seeded in the Garden of Madness
If it were solely up to me,Ultroswouldn’t be this high up the list. Despite being utterly gorgeous and incredibly novel, I found the game to be somewhat of a slog.
But despite that, many people adored this psychedelic Metroidvania, so let’s talk about why it’s a great Roguevania.
You awaken in the Sarcophagus and discover it’s inhabited by something god-like and utterly overwhelming. Time itself is fractured by it, and so every time you reach the end of one path, the entire adventure rewinds in true Groundhog Day fashion.
Thankfully, there areways to retain the knowledge and powers you’ve acquired, which help you discoverstrange new cornersand terrible new threats. All the while, you’ll piece together the truth about the Sarcophagus, and determine your role in this strange quest.
1A Robot Named Fight
Fight to the Finish
PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4
Morningstar Game Studio
August 06, 2025
Since I can already feel some of you grumbling, let me just say this. While all the games on this list are incredible, in my opinion, the onlytrueRoguevania on it isA Robot Named Fight.
It fully embraces both genres, offering streamlined adventures, powerful weapons, and all sorts of procedurally generated insanity to keep things fresh game after game.
You’re the last robot standing against the horror of the Megabeast, which has infected everything in its path.
Not only does the game embody a lot ofSuper Metroidenergy, but there’s a lot of surprising body horror to enjoy as well.
Like its rogue brethren,A Robot Named Fightisn’t easy. But as you unlock more and more devastating weaponry and upgrade modules, you’ll have more chances to get through the adventure in one piece.
10 Best Roguelites on Game Pass, Ranked
If the roguelike genre is too much, these lighter but awesome variants will meet you in the middle.
